For more than a decade, Katrina's Sparkle has supported initiatives that create opportunities, strengthen communities and improve lives. Inspired by Katrina's belief in helping others, these projects continue to create meaningful impact both locally and globally while carrying forward her legacy of kindness, compassion and service.
Empowering Young Minds in Nepal
In 2011, Katrina's Sparkle helped establish a Reading Room in Lamjung, Nepal, providing access to books, educational resources and opportunities for local children and young people.
The project was inspired by a trip Katrina shared with her brother Simon, where she witnessed first-hand the barriers many children faced in accessing education, particularly young girls. Deeply moved by the experience, Katrina wanted to help create opportunities that could empower future generations through learning.
The Reading Room remains a lasting reflection of her belief that education has the power to transform lives and create brighter futures.
Celebrating Safety Leadership
Katrina was highly respected in her professional life for her commitment to health, safety and caring for others.
To honour her contribution, VISY established the Katrina Hastings Safety Leadership Award, recognising individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership in creating safer workplaces and fostering a culture of responsibility, care and wellbeing.
The award serves as a lasting reminder of Katrina's belief that every person deserves to feel safe, supported and valued.
The Gennazzano Book Prize
Education was something Katrina valued deeply throughout her life.
Established in her honour, the Gennazzano Book Prize recognises students who demonstrate qualities that reflected Katrina's character — kindness, determination, leadership, generosity and a commitment to making a positive contribution to others.
The award continues to inspire young people to pursue their goals, contribute to their communities and strive to make a difference in the lives of those around them.
Just Keep Swimming
Katrina maintained a strong connection to the Berwick community, where many family members, friends and colleagues continue to honour her memory.
In recognition of her legacy, an aquarium was installed within the waiting area of the St John of God Berwick Comprehensive Cancer Centre. Featuring the words "Just Keep Swimming", the installation provides a calming and uplifting presence for patients, families and visitors during challenging times.
The project reflects Katrina's spirit of hope, resilience and optimism, offering comfort and encouragement to those navigating their own journeys.
A Legacy of Giving
Since its establishment, Katrina's Sparkle has distributed nearly $150,000 to charitable causes and community initiatives aligned with Katrina's values and vision for a brighter future.
These contributions have supported family safety initiatives, youth development, educational opportunities, social justice programs, community wellbeing projects and medical research causes.
Each project reflects a shared commitment to creating opportunities, empowering individuals and strengthening communities.
